Unfortunately this weekend I didn't get a chance to work on the house as much as I had hoped. This was because our dog Buck has decided over the past few weeks that he is Harry Houdini and has been escaping the nice new aluminum fence I put up in December. Apparently a four inch spacing was wide enough for him to squeeze out of. So to remain in the good graces of our neighbors I spent the lions share of Saturday putting cattle panel up on the inside of the fence to contain him. It may not be the most delicate solution but hopefully it will stand up to the "escape artist"!
So Sunday I did get some time to work at the house and got my dad to come over and help rip out a load bearing block wall in the utility room. Below is a view of the north half of the wall already out with the temporary wall behind it.
The south corner we wanted to be a little more delicate with as to not damage the mortar holding the adjacent block wall together. Fortunately we have a diamond blade for the circular saw. It may not cut through masonry quickly, but I don't do enough of this to justify the purchase of a true concrete saw. So we measured out on both sides of the wall to where we knew a hollow spot in the block would be and cut both sides. Talk about dust! Below is a view of the side that had plaster over the block.
And here is the final result..
I also managed to get the old furnace room demolished in the family room, as well as the closet that was above the stairs to the basement. I apologize about the quality of the pictures. I took them during breaks waiting for the circular saw to cool off and apparently there was more dust in the air than I thought!
So there it is... another weekend over. This week we have Mort's Water Co. coming in to cut out the concrete in the basement floor around the east and south exterior walls to put in tile. Hopefully that will cure our damp basement woes! Something about the fact that the floor of the basement is under lake level that probably contributes to that! :)
Next weekend we will start re-framing the master suite and office/guest bedroom. It feels good to be to the point of "putting back together" for a while! Stay tuned......
